Members of the European Parliament shall be elected directly, by universal suffrage and free and secret ballot every five (5) years.
Right to vote
Any citizen of the Republic of Cyprus or a citizen of another EU Member State who reaches the age of 18 by the date of the elections, shall be entitled to vote, provided that they are registered on the relevant electoral roll. Specifically:
(a) Cypriot citizens, including Turkish Cypriots living in the free areas, should be registered on the permanent electoral roll.
(b) Citizens of Member States of the European Union residing in Cyprus should be registered on the special electoral roll for European Citizens for the European Parliament elections.
(c) Turkish Cypriots residing in areas where the Government of the Republic does not exercise effective control and hold an identity card of the Republic of Cyprus issued by the Civil Registry system, shall be automatically registered on a special electoral roll.
For the 2024 European elections, if an application for registration on the relevant electoral roll is required, it should be submitted by 2nd April 2024.
Right to be elected
Any person who has the right to vote and who has reached the age of 21 also has the right to stand as a candidate in elections to the European Parliament (see Submission of candidacy section).
