The general Local Government elections shall be held every five (5) years and concern the election of Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Municipal Councillors and Members of School Boards in the municipalities, the election of Community leaders and Members of the Community Councils in the Communes, and the election of Presidents of District Authority Organisations at District level.

Right to vote
Any citizen of the Republic or a citizen of another EU Member State who has reached the age of 18 by the date of the elections, shall be entitled to vote, provided that they are registered on the relevant electoral roll. Specifically:
(α) Cypriot citizens, including Turkish Cypriots living in the free areas, should be registered on the permanent electoral roll
(b) Citizens of Member States of the European Union residing in Cyprus should be registered on the special electoral roll for European Citizens for the Local Government elections.
For the 2024 European elections, the application for registration on the relevant electoral roll should be submitted by 2nd April 2024.

For the municipal elections and elections at Community level, displaced voters shall vote to elect the authorities of their place of residence as well as those of their place of displacement.

Right to be elected
Anyone who has the right to vote and who has reached the age of 21 also has the right to stand as a candidate in the local government elections.
Citizens from EU Member States who reside in Cyprus may stand as candidates for the offices of Municipal Councillor, Member of a Community Council and a Member of a School Board (they may not stand as candidates for the office of President of the District Local Authority Organisation, Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Community Leader, and, if they are elected as members of a Community Council, they cannot claim the office of Deputy Community Leader).
